For those with the fewest options, On The Rise builds long-term relationships rooted in safety and belonging. Guided by the strength and initiative of our program participants, we walk alongside them toward wellbeing—as skilled partners and advocates.
In 2024 , our community’s steadfast support helped us expand our reach and deepen our impact, strengthening our shared commitment to lasting change.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about our work at On The Rise. Your support of our mission makes a meaningful difference—ensuring that women, trans, and nonbinary people experiencing homelessness in our community are met with consistency, care, and trust.
These are times of profound uncertainty for many. As systems shift around us, our commitment to each unique individual we work with remains clear and unwavering. We at On The Rise continue to hold space, provide stability, and build relationships—because we know that meaningful change happens at the pace of trust, and healing requires time, presence, and choice.
One recent moment brought this home for me: A long-time participant who exited homelessness several years ago reached out after falling behind on rent and facing the loss of her housing voucher. She’d been struggling with overlapping health challenges and told us that she felt ashamed—but she also said she knew she could count on On The Rise.
What followed was three months of deep, collaborative work. We helped her file for an appeal, advocated on her behalf, supported her through a successful inspection, and gathered the papers she needed to keep her voucher. Today, her housing is secure and she knows she’s not alone.
At On The Rise, we understand that this work is about showing up—day after day—for those who have been told, too often, that their needs are too complex or their lives too messy. Your support helps us do just that.

What does our ongoing relational approach look like?
On The Rise services center meaningful, individualized relationships with program participants. We work with individuals with a vast array of experiences and needs to help them reach success as defined by their own journeys. Read our sample happenings for glimpses into real-life situations where our approach comes into play.

A participant moved into an apartment and received a Moving Home Drive delivered by an advocate. The team felt a deep sense of joy seeing this participant in a more stable place after years of street homelessness and ongoing mental health challenges.
It has been especially meaningful to witness the participant form a strong bond with a newer advocate, particularly after the participant was deeply impacted by the departure of a long-time staff member from On The Rise. After the delivery, the participant and the advocate shared a sweet moment with a quick photoshoot before settling in and setting up the new space.

A housed participant called to share that they had been struggling with their mental health. They also expressed concern about leaving their apartment, as they had a pet they didn’t feel comfortable leaving alone for any length of time. As a result, they rarely left home or visited OTR.
In response, a home visit was scheduled to provide support and advocacy, particularly around their relationship with their landlord and a potential eviction. Leading up to the visit, the participant asked to speak with a staff member they had known and trusted for many years. Unfortunately, that advocate was unavailable and unable to connect with them.
This situation prompted reflection within the advocacy team about how to honor and maintain the long-standing relationships that participants find grounding and meaningful, while also creating space for new relationships to form. The team has since been exploring ways to thoughtfully balance continuity and connection with the flexibility needed to meet participants’ evolving needs and circumstances.

Several Keep The Keys participants felt isolated and low in the wake of recent losses and ongoing trauma within the community. While some were able to attend regularly on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, the team recognized a need to offer additional support.
In response, we’ve been reaching out to participants who we know would benefit from extra time in community at the Safe Haven. While we remain mindful of our capacity and the boundaries we need to hold, we’re also exploring how our guidelines can remain flexible—especially when participants are going through particularly difficult times.
Participants shared that being able to share a meal in the Safe Haven, even before formal KTK hours begin, has been especially meaningful. It’s become not just a gesture of care, but a reminder that they are welcome and not alone.

A participant learned that a beloved family member had passed away and that a significant amount of time had passed before their family informed them of the loss. Alongside the deep grief of losing someone they loved, the participant was also coping with feelings of hurt and anger around being left out of such an important moment.
In response, On The Rise provided a gift card so the participant could purchase mourning clothes — something they had expressed would help them process their grief and feel more connected to the rituals of loss. The participant shared stories about their family member, reflecting on their life and memories. They noted that speaking about them helps keep their memory alive, and that although it felt bittersweet, spending time in the Safe Haven and being reminded of them brought comfort during a painful time.
