2025 year in review
For those with the fewest options, On The Rise builds long-term relationships rooted in safety and belonging. Guided by the strength and initiative of our program participants, we walk alongside them toward wellbeing—as skilled partners and advocates.
In 2025, our community’s steadfast support helped us expand our reach and deepen our impact, strengthening our shared commitment to lasting change.
Thank you for taking the time to reflect on On The Rise’s work this past year. Your support makes it possible that women, trans, and nonbinary people experiencing homelessness are met each day with safety, dignity, and relationships they can rely on, especially in a moment when the systems surrounding them feel increasingly unpredictable.
This has been a year defined by instability at the federal level and escalating pressures on the communities we serve. Policy shifts around food assistance, immigration, and gender identity have created real fear and uncertainty for many of our participants. In the face of this, On The Rise’s commitment has remained steady: to show up every day with consistency, care, and a deep belief in each participant’s right to safety and belonging.
Because of you, our team has been able to respond in real time, expanding meal programs when SNAP benefits were abruptly cut, strengthening affirming support for our transgender and nonbinary participants, and providing intensive advocacy for Haitian community members facing the loss of Temporary Protected Status. This work calls for quick action, and creativity but at its core, it's built on something more enduring: trust.
I see the impact of that trust every day here. I’m reminded of a participant who has been connected with On The Rise since 2019. Over the past year, she faced mounting personal crises, housing instability, and an unsafe relationship. What followed was months of detailed, steady advocacy, preventing eviction, coordinating with housing authorities, supporting emergency moves, and walking alongside her through each setback and moment of hope.That kind of persistence is only possible when trust has been built overtime, trust that she could return, be met with consistency, and not have to navigate each challenge alone. She is now living safely in her new apartment. That milestone was not the result of any single intervention but the slow, deliberate work of sustained relationship.
This is the heart of On The Rise. We show up for people navigating experiences that are often unseen, misunderstood, or dismissed. We stay when systems break down. We hold hope when it feels out of reach. And with your partnership, we are able to build the kind of trusting, non-judgemental relationships that lead to long-term change.

What does our ongoing relational approach look like?
On The Rise services center meaningful, individualized relationships with program participants. We work with individuals with a vast array of experiences and needs to help them reach success as defined by their own journeys. Read our sample happenings for glimpses into real-life situations where our approach comes into play.

The advocacy team recently helped a participant avoid eviction. The advocates helped the participant apply for and secure governmental funding to pay some overdue rent, and they worked closely with the housing authority and the property manager to keep them informed about the support we were offering. This communication helped to maintain a positive relationship between the landlord and the participant during a very tense time.
The team also helped the participant apply for public benefits in an effort to stabilize them financially and enable them to maintain their housing moving forward.

A participant who recently moved into housing requested support because they were having difficulty budgeting for food. Since meals are provided in the shelters, spending money on groceries was new to them. Although there are resources like Meals on Wheels, this participant did not feel comfortable accepting food that was prepared by someone else. On The Rise helped provide funds, allowing them to buy some groceries. An Advocate also accompanied them to a local food pantry to orient them to the process with the hope that this will help them with food costs in the future.

In 2025, OTR restarted a partnership with Cambridge Healthcare for the Homeless providing an on-site nursing clinic once a week for participants. This partnership is producing improved health outcomes, including a situation with one participant who sleeps outside and has difficulties with accessing medication. Thanks to the clinic and collaborative support from OTR and the nurse, the participant was able to get better access to prescription medication and a shelter bed, providing increased stability to their situation.

A housed participant was displaced from their apartment due to dangerous conditions in their unit that were impacting their health. Even though the participant had not been in contact with OTR for some time, they knew they could count on us for support. The team helped the participant secure temporary housing and provided food resource support while the participant pursued legal actions against the landlord, also with the support of advocates.

On The Rise is also funded by the MA Department of Public Health Sexual and Domestic Violence Division and is supported by the Massachusetts Office for Victim Assistance through American Rescue Plan (ARPA) funds from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Coronavirus State Recovery Funds. Additional ARPA funding was provided through the City of Cambridge.
