DEFYING THE ODDS
 |
 |
| |
When I first came to On The Rise I
was fleeing from a domestic violence relationship.
I was emotionally and mentally drained and very isolated.
Today, I am no longer a defeated woman. I know now
that I have choices and that I can have victory over
the challenges we all have in life.

A Woman at On The Rise
|

|
n The Rise’s program has proven to be an innovative
and effective way of helping the most highly marginalized women
defy the odds and transform their lives. In 2007 at
On The Rise:
- 291 women found safety, practical necessities and
a supportive community within a dignified home open six
days/week including most holidays.
- An average of 98 women used the Safe Haven each month, approximately
28-45 women each day.
- 187 women (64%) continued their work with us from the
previous year and 104 women (36%) came for their first time in 2007.
- 159 women worked intensely with staff to address
one or more specific challenges that they were unable
to resolve prior to the support, accompaniment and advocacy
of On The Rise staff.
- A legal clinic engaged 55 women to address legal questions and advice. In several cases, the
legal clinic led to cases being brought forward with pro-bono legal representation for the
individual provided by our partners.
- A weekly health clinic provided by Nurse Practitioner Christine Johnsen, served 62 women. She also
offered a flu shot clinic and TB clinic in the Safe Haven.
- 80 women participated in the weekly creative and
well-being activities of the Wellness Program
- 44 women moved into
housing of their own.
